Why the night comes before the date
An Islamic day starts at sunset, not midnight (when the Islamic date changes). The "15th night" of Sha'ban therefore begins at maghrib on the evening of 14 Sha'ban. That is why newspapers write "Shab-e-Barat on 3 February" while the calendar shows 15 Sha'ban on 4 February: both describe the same night. The same rule applies to Laylat al-Qadr, Shab-e-Meraj and chand raat.
What is Shab-e-Barat?
Shab-e-Barat (Persian/Urdu, often translated "night of release" or "night of forgiveness") is the name used in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh for the night of mid-Sha'ban; in Arabic it is Laylat al-Nisf min Sha'ban. Many Muslims spend it in prayer, Quran recitation, dua for forgiveness and for relatives who have passed away, and some fast on 15 Sha'ban.
