Why is Saudi Arabia often one day ahead of Pakistan?

Both countries count the same twelve lunar months, but they start each month differently. Saudi Arabia's civil calendar, Umm al-Qura, is calculated in advance: a month begins when, on the 29th, the moon sets after the sun at Makkah and the new moon (conjunction) has already happened before sunset. Pakistan instead waits for an actual sighting of the crescent reported to the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. A young crescent that the calculation accepts is often too thin to be seen from Pakistan the same evening, so Pakistan's month frequently starts a day later. This month Umm al-Qura began Jumada al-Awwal on Mon, 12 Oct 2026, Pakistan on Tue, 13 Oct 2026.

Umm al-Qura and religious dates in Saudi Arabia

Umm al-Qura is used for government, banking and everyday dating in the Kingdom. For Ramadan, Eid ul Fitr and Dhu al-Hijjah (Hajj and Eid ul Adha), Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court still calls for moon sighting on the 29th evening, so these dates can occasionally differ from the printed Umm al-Qura date by a day. Expected dates for 2027 are on our Islamic calendar 2027 page.

Which countries follow the Saudi date?

The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain usually begin months on the same day as Saudi Arabia. Oman relies on its own moon sighting and is sometimes a day later. Pakistan, India and Bangladesh use local sighting, and many Muslims in Europe and North America follow either Saudi announcements or their own councils.
