Two meanings of “chand raat”
Literally chand raat means “moon night”: the 29th evening of any Islamic month, when people look west after sunset for the new crescent. In Pakistan the phrase is used above all for the night before Eid ul Fitr, when the Shawwal moon is announced and markets stay open late for mehndi, bangles and Eid shopping. In 2027 that Eid chand raat is expected on Mon, 8 Mar 2027 or Tue, 9 Mar 2027, depending on the Ramadan moon.
How the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee decides
- On the 29th, zonal committees meet in the provincial capitals and the central committee meets in one city, with support from the Pakistan Meteorological Department and SUPARCO.
- Witnesses who saw the crescent after sunset give testimony, which is checked against the expected moon position.
- The chairman announces on television and radio, usually between 8 and 11 pm, whether the new month starts the next day.
- If no reliable sighting is reported, the month completes 30 days — a month never has 31 days.
