What Happened During the First Islamic Year?

The Prophet ﷺ didn’t start the calendar with a victory. He started it with a sacrifice.

Inna ‘iddata ash-shuhūri ‘indallāhi ithnā ‘ashara shahran fī kitābillāhi yawma khalaqas-samāwāti wal-ard, minhā arba‘atun ḥurum, dhālika ad-dīnul-qayyim, fa-lā taẓlimū fīhinna anfusakum…

English Translation :
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth, of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them…”

When & Why This Verse Was Revealed

When:
This verse was revealed in Medinah, during the Prophet’s ﷺ later years, as part of Surah At-Tawbah, one of the last revealed surahs.

Why:
It was revealed to establish the sanctity of time, correct pre-Islamic calendar manipulation, and emphasize the significance of the four sacred months (Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, Rajab).

In pre-Islamic Arabia, tribes would often alter the calendar for strategic reasons (e.g., to fight in a sacred month), which Islam firmly condemned.

The verse restored the divine order of the lunar calendar, identifying Muharram as one of the four sacred months and giving it spiritual significance, especially relevant for Islamic New Year reflections.

It means that during Muharram, every good deed is multiplied, and every sin is more serious. That’s why the Prophet ﷺ called it “the month of Allah” and why fasting in it holds special value.

• The Prophet ﷺ fasted on this day and said it wipes away the sins of the previous year
